De Portas Fechadas (Behind Closed Doors) revisits the play No Exit (1944), written by Jean-Paul Sartre, and, through a two-years long research of the playtext and Sartre’s philosophy, enacts an original staging upon the material, proposes a new spatial interpretation of the hell Garcin, Inés and Estelle find themselves in.
The aesthetic of the bourgeoisie class, once the Second Empire for Sartre, is updated to the all white and minimalism of today´s super rich. This element, radicalised, becomes a provocation that brings up the impossibility of privacy and the forceful subjectification to the ever-presence of the other upon myself. The audience, placed in an arena disposition, close up to the scene, find themselves sharing this 2 hours long torture, as the work is not easily digested and requires to be endured.
The once three sofas from the original play are substituted for three acrobatic fabrics, which the actors manipulate and appropriate throughout the play. This completely reinvents the material, creating pockets of airness amidst an extremely dense text, and making lasting visual impressions on the audience.
