Devising Director and Playwright
HEAVEN IS OTHER PEOPLE is an original short piece, devised in collaboration with the performers, in response to plastic artist Mladen Stilinovic’s work An Artist Who Cannot Speak English Is No Artist, and the director’s provocation “What do you conform to, to exist?”. The script organises the material generated through weeks of devising and discussion, and, not unlike new-playwriting, samples from a number of sources.
The final work aims to question cultural hegemonies, and draws a journey from conformity to revolution, from collectiveness as oppression to collectiveness as the ultimate revolutionary act, reclaiming and remeaning (from the Portuguese ressignificar, to redefine the meaning of something) it through the theatrical ritual.
Devised under the advisement of Gary Keegan, with the Foundation year students at The Lir Academy of Dramatic Arts.
